Fishguard - Seaport and holiday centre at the mouth of the River Gwaun on the south side of Fishguard Bay, Pembrokeshire, southwest Wales, 30 km/19 mi southwest of Cardigan; population (1991 est) 5,000. There is a ferry service to Rosslare in the Republic of Ireland. The town comprises: the original fishing village of Lower Fishguard; modern Fishguard on the cliff above; Goodwick, on the western side; and the harbour village. On the cliff top, the town centres on the market-place; below, the old fishing village retains its quay and pier as reminders of its former industries of herring fishing and pilchard curing. Fishguard Bay has sufficient depth of water to take the largest ocean liners. The crossing to Rosslare, at 87 km/54 mi, is the shortest sea crossing to Ireland.
